Travis McCoy captures scenes in Khayelitsha, Cape Town
Foundation Ambassadors
Our Ambassadors
At the Staying Alive we are proud to have two globally-known musicians support our cause. Kelly Rowland and Travis McCoy. Read about their involvement below...
Travis McCoy
Continuing the legacy of Kelly Rowland’s dedicated efforts, Travis McCoy of alternative hip hop collective Gym Class Heroes joined Staying Alive in 2009 as the new Staying Alive Foundation Ambassador. As part of his new role, Travis has been using his inimitable style to help raise the profile of the Foundation.
Travis began his work for Staying Alive on the red carpet at last year’s Europe Music Awards in Liverpool, chatting to stars about their attitudes towards sex, relationships and condoms. Since then, Travis has travelled the world filming for MTV Staying Alive Special ‘Travis McCoy’s Unbeaten Track.’ Travis met with Foundation grantees in South Africa, the Philippines and India faced with the challenge of writing a track to document his experience.
Travis hit the studio in September to record his exclusive Staying Alive track which was released in November 2009, with all proceeds going directly to the Staying Alive Foundation.
Kelly Rowland
In March 2008, Kelly Rowland was announced as the first official celebrity face of the Staying Alive Foundation. Kelly took her first steps in her role as Ambassador in June 2008, where she visited Staying Alive Foundation grantees in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, filming for MTV Staying Alive special ‘The Diary of Kelly Rowland’ as she went.
As well as meeting with Staying Alive Foundation projects, Kelly participated in frank discussions with groups of young people in New York and Johannesburg on sex, HIV and AIDS, condoms and relationships.
Kelly made an extra special impact in Kenya, where she was tested for HIV at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi. “HIV tests in Kenya are free and take just a few minutes out of your day,” Kelly told Kenyan press, “Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to HIV infection, and it is important for everyone to know their HIV status.”
The diary of Kelly Rowland premiered on MTV on World AIDS Day 2008 (1st Dec).

Hi,my name is Alex from Nairobi,Kenya,I just wanna bless you guys for the superb work you are doing. Its really encouraging to see such a huge entertainment franchise such as MTV helping out people without caring their race and tribe and to think of the life of people who are suffering from the HIV/AIDS stigma in the 21st century, I really thank you guys for that. When are you guys coming to Kenya? because there is still some work to be done in terms of educating the youth on issues about sex education and the importance of safe sex to avoid unwanted pregnancies, spreading of venereal diseases such as herpes and other life circumstances such as suicides.Thank you guys.
