Promundo

December 2007 Winners

In December 2007 the Staying Alive foundation awarded 30 new grants to grassroots HIV and AIDS projects around the world. You can read about the recipients and their inspiring, change-making initiatives below. Each and every one continues to make a difference in their local community, many of which are still being supported by Staying Alive, these include:

Promundo

Location: Brazil

The NGO Promundo, which mainly works on gender issues, set up the project Youth for Gender Equity which is led by young people. The project organises HIV prevention activities targeted at young people from one of the favelas in Rio. 10 young people are selected to become educators to implement workshops in the community, using animated films, radionovelas and educational manuals.

Leaders with New Dimensions

Location: Nigeria

Eunice was a SAF award winner in 2005 when LEND was called Global Youth Partners. She and Onyebuchi raise awareness among 'hearing impaired youth' by producing and distributing special IEC materials, organising peer education for the target group, organising video showings, community walks and inter-school talent shows.

Youth Are Talking

Location: Nigeria

YAT set up a radio show called YOUTHMAG which is aimed at youths in and around Lagos. They produce radio jingles on HIV, have monthly call-in sessions with key personalities in the radio studio, produce interviews and organise skill building sessions with young people that are involved in media and HIV prevention.

Mobile VCT Project

Location: Rwanda

The Mobile VCT service project is set up by the medical student association of Rwanda. They train other students on HIV awareness and VCT, organise workshops for local leaders, organise public awareness through public animations, and form anti-HIV clubs.

Carolina Empowerment Group

Location: USA

Natalia Cales is a young woman who recently lost her mother to AIDS. The Carolina Empowerment Group implements the ‘Sisters Informing Healing Learning Empowering' HIV prevention program in South Carolina, by partnering with other organisations. They organise monthly youth sessions to discuss topics around HIV.
