An interview with Dynka
We chatted to one of our new grantees, Dynka Amorim dos Santos who is 25. We asked him about his NGO Cidadãos do Mundo (Citizens of the World) which works in Portugal.
Tell us about Cidadãos do Mundo and the activities it carries out
Cidadãos do Mundo promotes the empowerment of young vulnerable groups, particularly migrants coming from Portuguese-speaking African countries. Its main goals are HIV/AIDS prevention and acess to treatment, through public health services and education. It does this through peer education and the media.
Currently we are carrying out a media program called Youth Media “to destroy” HIV/AIDS. This project consists of:
• An interactive blog
• A youth radio program
• A youth Magazine
• Informative leaflets
• SMS text messaging
Why did you join Cidadãos do Mundo?
I joined Cidadãos do Mundo in 2005, when I travelled to Portugal from Sao Tomé and Principe (a Portuguese speaking country in Central Africa) to continue my studies. I had heard about the organisation in my home country where I was active and passionate in HIV/AIDS prevention. I witnessed lots of people being infected and so in 2003 started a youth movement at my High School called “Bué Fixe”, meaning “very cool”. Two years later I helped create an online and paper youth magazine to inform them about HIV/AIDS.
If you could give just one message to youth about HIV/AIDS, what would it be?
Hey guys, the HIV pandemic affects people all over the world without discriminating between sex, social condition, race, origin or religion, so protect yourself and take care.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Good question. In 5 years I see myself being more responsible for getting more and more youth involved and mobilized in Cidadãos do Mundo.
